Safari Browser SSL Certificates Will Undergo Major Overhaul on 1 September 2020
Apple, the company behind Safari Browser, just recently ‘dropped bombs’ on long-term SSL certificates. Starting in September 2020, Apple’s native browser will no longer trust sites having an SSL/ TLS certificate with a validity of more than 398 days. Remember, this applies only for SSL/TLS leaf certs and not for the root and intermediate certificates.
What Does This Mean for My Website?
Basically, if you already have a site with an SSL certificate valid for more than a year, it won’t affect you. Safari will only snub long-term certificates after September 1, 2020. This means your existing certificate is good as long as you buy one with validity less than a year and roughly one month after that.
As of now, the accepted validity period for older websites is 825 days, and you will need to take action for these certificates.
Why Did Apple Shorten the Validity Period for SSL Certificates in Safari?
You see, Apple cares about security in its system. And this move is a step onto that.
When digital SSL certificates have a shorter validity period, site owners need to buy it regularly. This means they need to inject the latest authentication system on their websites. Furthermore, this step will prevent reusing old certificates that hackers and phishers probably have already gotten a way through.
Does this Apply to Other Browsers as Well?
As of now, there is no official news of other web browsers following in the footsteps of Apple. In any case, we can soon expect other browsers to shorten the SSL Certificates Expiry date as well. It may take some time, but the news will eventually come. This is why you will need to be ready for that.
Is it Difficult to Get an SSL Certificate?
Shorter SSL Certificates’ expiry date in Safari Browser won’t be a concern given that you can easily purchase and renew SSL certificates. Moreover, there are many SSL certificate providers, meaning that if you are not satisfied by the service of one company, then you can transition to another service giver in the span of a year.
