What is Ransomware?
As the name implies, ransomware is a form of malicious software, “malware” for short, which prohibits the normal access to a system or files, unless the victim pays a ransom to regain the access.
Dates back almost ten years, ransomware was originated from Russia as one of the cyber security threats that essentially holds a device hostage until a fee is paid to restore it to normal.
Ransomware is designed to block system files and demand payment to provide the victim with the key that can decrypt the blocked content. It is the most widespread and is believed that this is the most prominent and worrisome cyber threat of the moment.
Ransomware can get into a computer system in many ways:
• Infected email attachments
• Infected removable storage media like portable thumbnail drives
• Downloaded software
• Links in email, social media websites, or instant messages
